The Office of Campus Police Services would like to alert community members to recently reported suspicious activity in the vicinity of campus. An unknown male entered a TSC Corp. residence on Pennington Road and, when encountered by a resident, inquired about the need for lawn-care service. When asked if he was affiliated with TSC Corp., the man left the home. At another TSC Corp. residence on Pennington Road, property was reported missing after a side door was left unlocked. We do not know if these incidents are related to one another but want to take this opportunity to keep community members informed. We also want to remind everyone to be aware of their surroundings and to lock doors and windows in both vehicles and residences. If anyone has information to share in reference to the incidents previously mentioned or becomes aware of any suspicious activity, they should call the Office of Campus Police Services at 609-771-2345, immediately.

Walker was in possession of several “dealer master keys” at the time of his arrest and has a history of arrests related stolen vehicles. He was charged with receiving stolen property and motor vehicle master keys. We believe there is likely a connection between the theft of this vehicle and others that have been stolen from campus. Though we do not have reason to anticipate Walker being released in the near future, we have issued a letter barring him from campus and have instructed our officers that if he returns to campus he is to be arrested immediately. A photo of Tommy Lee Walker, Jr. is attached to this note. We ask that, if anyone sees him on campus in the future, they contact Campus Police Services at 771-2345 or 911.

The suspect has been described as a 5’10″ tall 20 year old white male wearing a gray pullover sweatshirt and black bandana over his face. Lawrence Police are currently investigating a second, similar robbery that occurred in Lawrenceville during the overnight hours. Students in off-campus housing or traveling through the neighborhoods around TCNJ’s or Rider University’s campuses are advised to exercise caution.
The Office of Campus Police services received reports today that a 1993 Nissan and a 1994 Honda were stolen from Lot 6.

The Office of Campus Police services received reports today that a 1993 Nissan and a 1994 Honda were stolen from Lot 6. Campus Police regularly patrol all parking areas, but these thefts occurred without any confrontation or evidence of forced entry. During 2008, several local colleges and universities experienced similar thefts of 1990s model Nissans, Hondas, and Saturns by a car-theft ring that used illegally obtained skeleton keys as one means of entering and stealing vehicles. This method of gaining vehicle access makes it difficult to determine that a theft is taking place. Owners of those vehicle types can help protect their automobiles by purchasing aftermarket anti-theft devices, such as The Club, which can prevent the use of a skeleton key in perpetrating an auto theft. We ask that members of the College community immediately call TCNJ Police at 609-771-2345 if anyone is seen acting suspiciously in campus parking lots.

The Council of Deans met this morning to discuss the beginning of the academic year in light of the disruption caused by Hurricane Irene.

The Council of Deans met this morning to discuss the beginning of the academic year in light of the disruption caused by Hurricane Irene. We understand the hardships this storm has caused and have considered multiple possibilities. While none of these is perfect, we consider the following the best course of action under the circumstances.

RESUMPTION OF CLASSES

Upon review, we have determined that we have the capacity to begin classes at 5:00pm on Tuesday, August, 30th, INSTEAD OF Wednesday, August 31st as previously communicated. From Tuesday evening on, the normal class schedule will resume, including the already published schedule for Tuesday, September 6. We understand that some faculty members and students may not be able to travel. We ask that faculty members contact their departments when classes need to be cancelled, and if possible to communicate with their students via SOCS email. Students who cannot travel for classes should contact the college via academic@tcnj.edu. As always, safety is the most important consideration when you are making decisions related to travel. Also, please be aware that the TCNJ Library may not have regular hours on the evening of Tuesday, August 30th.

ACADEMIC WELCOME SESSIONS FOR FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS

The College-wide Convocation will not be rescheduled; however, it is important that we mark the beginning of the academic year with a formal welcome. Furthermore, we have heard from many students and faculty members about how important the welcome sessions are in greeting and informing students as well as a key opportunity to begin forging student and faculty relationships. To that end, School sessions will be held on tomorrow morning, Tuesday, August 30, from 9:00 – 10:00 am in the following locations:

School of the Arts and Communication: Mildred & Ernest E. Mayo Concert Hall (Music Building)

School of Business: TW Lounge

School of Education: Elementary, Early Childhood, Special Ed, Deaf and Hard of Hearing and open option only:
Roscoe West 201; Secondary education majors: Should meet with their content area School welcome session.

School of Engineering: Roscoe West 202

School of Humanities and Social Sciences: Kendall Auditorium

School of Nursing, Health, and Exercise Science: Library Auditorium

School of Science: Brower 202

Departmental faculty sessions will be held immediately following School sessions, from 10:00-11:00am. The locations for the majority of these sessions are unchanged from the previously planned locations. Any changes will be announced at the School sessions.

Education majors, as previously planned, will have their additional session with the School of Education faculty from 4:00 – 5:00pm at the following locations:

Elementary Early Childhood: Roscoe West 201

Special Ed and Deaf and Hard of Hearing: Forcina 348

Secondary Education: Roscoe West 202

Open Options Education: Forcina 227 (Dean’s conference room)

We recognize that the timing of the storm and its disruption at the beginning of the semester is particularly an issue for Tuesday-only day classes. As with all weather-related events, we anticipate that faculty members and students will adjust accordingly. Students enrolled in a Tuesday day-only classes who wish to drop or add a course after the initial meeting (on September 13th) may elect to enter drop/add late through a request to their Dean’s office by 4:30pm, Tuesday, September 14th.

Please be advised of the following schedule changes.

Please be advised of the following schedule changes:

- Convocation and Monday’s original Welcome Week schedule have been cancelled. A revised schedule will be distributed to students today through their CA’s and posted on the Welcome Week website.

- The first day of classes has been moved to Wednesday, August 31. Students should follow their regular Wednesday schedule.

- Upper class move-in has been extended and will take place on both Monday, August 29 and Tuesday, August 30.

In an effort to accommodate students and families who are dealing with storm-related issues, the College has postponed the first day of classes to Wednesday, August 31st and extended move in dates for upper class students to include both Monday, August 29th and Tuesday, August 30th.

The campus is open and prepared for students to move in on Monday. However, while campus roadways are clear and College facilities have not sustained any significant damage as a result of the storm, widespread flooding has been reported throughout the state and we recognize that it may be a burden for some to make it to campus tomorrow. Personal safety should be the primary concern in choosing the most convenient move in time.

Furthermore, we recognize that some students, such as those who live out-of-state or in areas that were evacuated from their homes, may face challenges in getting to campus during the extended move-in time. We request that these students contact the Office of Academic Affairs (academic@tcnj.edu) at their convenience.

Convocation, as well as Monday’s original Welcome Week schedule for tomorrow, has been cancelled. A revised schedule will be distributed to students today through their CA’s and posted on the Welcome Week website. We ask that you continue to check for updates and scheduling changes on TCNJ’s home page.

Thank you for your continued cooperation. We are looking forward to your safe arrival.

The College of New Jersey is continuing to closely monitor storm conditions resulting from Hurricane Irene and assess campus conditions in the wake of the storm. At this time, there are reports of widespread flooding throughout the state however, no campus roadways are blocked or flooded.

The campus has power and Facilities staff are on campus addressing damage that has resulted from the storm. No significant damage appears to have been sustained to residence halls. On campus residents should call x 2353 to report any storm damage. Leave a message if you receive voicemail; messages are being checked routinely and staff is being dispatched accordingly.
